Encuentro is a neighborhood wine bar and café featuring an eclectic, vegetarian menu and organic/sustainable wines from small, local and old world vintners. The creators of what may be Oakland’s first vegetarian wine bar include Eric Tucker, executive chef at acclaimed San Francisco vegetarian restaurant Millennium, and Lacey Sher, former owner of New Jersey vegan restaurant Down to Earth. Veteran home chef and longtime commercial real-estate agent Linda Braz is the third partner.

They boast an all-organic menu with a lot to choose from. “Vegetarian cuisine in the style of enotecas and tapas bars … utilizing seasonal and market driven ingredients.” Bruschetta, bocadillos, salads (Farro and Smoked Goat Cheddar Salad… Mmm), small plates like Rich Truffled Mushroom Pecan Pate (vegan) grain mustard, date chutney, caper berries w/ crostini & French Navy beans, root vegetables with Field Roast “sausage” and red wine, smoked pimenton (vegan). There are also sandwiches, cheeses, sweets and a wide selection of organic wines from small, independent producers.

Bellanico is an Italian wine bar and restaurant in Oakland’s Glenview district. They have wine flights of sustainable, biodynamic and organic wines from Italy and around the world. There is a Family Happy Hour from 5-6pm Sun & 5:30 to 6:30 Mon through Thurs. Try their 4 Course Tasting menu for $24 with the optional prix fixed progressive wine flight for $13 (Sun - Thurs) or do some of your own wine pairings. The staff is friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. Enjoy a glass of wine and a snack at the bar or sit down for a full meal at a table. Choose from a full menu of Italian finger foods, antipasti, pasta, gnocchi, entrees and desserts.

Wine Pairing at Bellanico

A good pairing of food and wine can make tasting food and wine a more enjoyable experience. The perfect food and wine pairing can be heaven. The 4 Course Tasting menu with wine pairings at Bellanico in Oakland is a great way to have an excellent wine pairing experience without have to pay an arm and a leg for it.

If wine pairing interests you and you’d like to try some of your own with Bellanico’s diinner menu & wine list then read on. If you want Fried olives or fried baby artichokes, think sparkling wine or beer. Bubbles always lighten up fried dishes and clean away the oil from your tongue. For the fried mondeghili (meatballs) go with a “Juicy and Medium - Bodied” light red with some good acid to wash that meat fat off. 1st choice is the Barbera d’Alba ‘Serra di Gatti’. 2nd would be the Marzemino, Terre di Gioia. For the smoked tuna crostini, the Lagrein Rose Brut is a nice addition.

Whether you’re starting or ending with their cheese plate; a sweeter white, like their Riesling, Reuscher-Haart, Mosel, or a fruit forward red will pair up nicely. For something strong like the Robiola, try a the Drusian Prosecco or the Barbera d’Alba, Paitin; one of their “bold reds”. For the Vento d’Estate go for a well balanced “Medium-Bodied to Full- Bodied” red like the Dolcetto ‘Bric del Salto’, or the Vinho Tinto, Garrida. The Vin Santo “Vigna San Torpe”, will pair up with the Blu Del Moncenisio as will the Tawny Port or the Madeira.

Marzano (on College)

Ghirabaldi’s on College has remodeled 1/2 of their restaurant into Marzano; on College (they have another location on Park blvd in Oakland). Marzano is not a wine bar but their predominantly Italian wine list makes them an interesting pizzeria to visit in Oakland. They had a “vini della casa” (house wine) for only $5 a glass when they 1st opened their Park Blvd location. At their Park Blvd location they serve all there wines in water glasses. That works for a $5 glass of house wine but a $10 glass of wine should be served in some style of wine glass.

Adesso is an Italian wine bar that serves up some tasty Italian small plates. They host an apertivi hour from 5-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday (with the purchase of a drink; you can graze on the buffet of little bites). You can find a similar offering from 10:30-11:30 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and until midnight Thursday-Saturday. The wine list includes over 25 Italian wines by the glass and plenty more in bottles. They also make some good cocktails.

Adesso’s house-made salumi and pates are a must try. There are more than 30+ types of house cured meats, including lanza (cured pork loin with coriander) and goat prosciutto, and 10+ pates using meats such as duck, pigeon, rabbit and pork. His handiwork is displayed in a glass case at the salumi station, where the crew slices it into tissue-paper-thin slices to fan out on large platters, atop piadina (flatbread) or in panini. A selection of antipasti includes oysters, salads and salt cod fritters. House-made gelato and flourless chocolate cake are available for dessert.

Still hungry? Walk down to Dopo, their sister restaurant, at 4293 Piedmont Ave (only a block or so away).

Marc 49 is a cozy little wine bar with a heated outdoor patio and cool back room that is reminiscent of an old west saloon. They have an affordable selection of wines by the glass, by the bottle and some good beers on tap. Currently their wine flights are 3 tastes for $11 or 4 tastes for $14 (prices may vary). Their menu of Italian inspired small plates (cleverly named after local cities & streets) includes panini, bruschetta, some salads and other goodies.
